Chapters IX-XII

1. Why do our “trough periods” make us so vulnerable (Lewis, 43)? Is this applicable to you?

"Trough periods", known as a low point in achievement and satisfaction, test the true character of a person and their way of handling things. Affliction causes sorrow, despair, and misery upon a person's life; their thoughts and emotions are commonly broken inside. "The attack has a much better chance of success when the man's whole inner world is drab and cold and empty", Screwtape said. Their feelings and attitudes are the foundation of how people are going to perceive the world, which can cause them to become more exposed to false beliefs. I can somewhat relate to this. Whenever I'm in a bad mood or hurt, I tend to be more mean and rude causing to not really care what I'm doing at the moment. My emotions generally control my actions and thoughts.

2. What does beautiful truth about pleasure does Screwtape share? Make a list of pleasures.

In this Chapter, Screwtape clearly expresses his feelings about sensual temptations. He mentions that that it is the desire of the flesh. In I John 2:16, it says that " For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world." Screwtape is very true in the sense that all humans have temptations and lustful feelings, but it is based upon the individual on how he or she may handle it.

List of Pleasures
- the pleasure of eating
- the pleasure of sleeping
- the pleasure of watching t.v
- the pleasure of spending time with family

3. What are your thoughts on music and joy after reading this chapter?

After reading this chapter, I believe that my true joy will come from the Lord. Although many people gain their happiness from earthly pleasures; they don't realize its all God's creation. Without him, we would have nothing. On earth, he gives us joy through various aspects of life. Through His blessings, Christians are able to feel His love wholly.

4. What is the “safest road to Hell” (Lewis, 61)? Do you agree or disagree?

"Indeed the safest road to Hell is the gradual one-" Screwtape noted. First, I don't believe that there is any "safe" road to Hell. Hell isn't a place of comfort or peace; it's the total opposite of safe. Although in this case, I think that Screwtape is trying to convey the picture of dying as if you have nothing to live to, or any rules to live by. Screwtape also adds, "the gentle slop, soft underfoot, without sudden turnings, without milestones, without signposts". I consider that he is telling the patient to enjoy the earthly satisfactions without any thoughts on moral values. Screwtape influences the thought to enjoy life now before it all fades away.

5. What is the role of “nothing” (Lewis, 60) and “small sins” (Lewis, 60)? What does that mean for you?
The role of "nothing' describes the feeling of how some people may overlook the Christian life. For example, one patient talks about how he spent his life doing absolutely nothing he enjoyed. It informs individuals that they shouldn't fill their lives up with useless things that offers no discrete enjoyment. This role of 'nothing" tries to lead people away from Christ because non believers and demons, such as Screwtape, deceive their way of thinking by tricking people into believing that they will live for nothing if they follow the Christian way. Many people follow these wicked ways because they physically cant see their reward. Many unbelievers think that the Christian lifestyle is strict and controlling, however believers see is as rewarding. However, for me, living for Christ is a reward because I do owe my life to him since he died for me. Christ is always good, and I don't feel as if I'm living for nothing.
"Small sins" aren't true; a sin is a sin. Screwtape tricks people into believing that if the sin is "small', the level of guiltiness should be low as well. However, the main reason behind this is to cause a separation between the relationship of God and man. I believe that a relationship with God is important, and the devil is out to attack and destroy the bond. For me, I constantly have to remind myself that all sins are equal, whether or not how big or small it is in my eyes.
