“Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard” is inspired by an old friend of Thomas Gray, who was an average man that passed away, yet impacted the life of Gray in a significant, personal way. The death of his friend affected him deeply; his sorrow was expressed through the sounds of nature and atmosphere. Others were touched by Gray’s poem that ennobled the mediocre man. He notes that either rich or poor, every man can make a change through their talents and have great opportunities. In the end, all will be useless when left in a churchyard at his or her grave; Gray also wonders if anyone will grieve at his grave.
